Angela Milne started this petition to Education Secretary

We need the Government to intervene and ensure that the educational needs of our children are given priority over the economy.

What a ludicrous position we have found ourselves in, when we can go to a restaurant with family and friends, have family day’s out to zoos and theme parks, spend an evening drinking with friends in pubs, even fly abroad on holidays, but our children can’t go to school to be educated!

The really sad fact about this situation is the inverse effect that it has had upon the least well off children and children who may already be struggling educationally. Children attending private schools - or even the most successful state schools, such as grammar schools - are managing to provide online lessons and follow a structured timetable of subjects. Unfortunately, the majority of other schools have provided a haphazard and inconsistent approach with some not offering any online lessons at all, limited access to teachers and little marking or checking of work being offered. This particularly disadvantages children who may already be struggling educationally.

The scientific evidence relating to children and Covid 19 indicates that children are the least vulnerable of all groups to contacting the virus. But we do know, and there is ample evidence to prove it, that children’s educational, social and emotional well-being is likely to be significantly effected if they have insufficient opportunities to engage with others and participate in the educational and structured activities that schools are able to offer.
