Defend the STEM fields at Australian universities

The government under Education Minister Simon Birmingham has proposed $1.2 billion in university funding cuts, with science subjects being the hardest hit.

According to Universities Australia, science, technology, engineering and maths will lose $405 million in base funding over four years.

Australia is poised to become a STEM stronghold over the next five years. If these cuts go through, we lose a massive number of STEM opportunities.

Cuts in university funding will jeopardize programs for those in disadvantaged positions. It will jeopardize places at universities for those who would otherwise not have access to the mainstream university pathways.

The government is trying hard to make education only for those of privileged backgrounds. We cannot let these cuts go through, as we cannot endanger STEM fields, or positions in higher education for those who do not come from privileged positions.

We cannot let the government deny education in the STEM fields, and cannot let them get away with these education cuts.
