What is Mental Health?

“Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

Conditions such as stress, depression, and anxiety can all affect mental health and disrupt a person’s routine. Looking after mental health can preserve a person’s ability to enjoy life. Doing this involves reaching a balance between life activities, responsibilities, and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. Social and financial circumstances, biological factors, and lifestyle choices can all shape a person’s mental health.
Why is it necessary?

Mental Health is often considered to be a weakness that has no cure. Mental disorders are one of the leading causes of disability.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness estimates that one in five people live with some sort of mental disorder or disease. Despite the fact that the average age of early signs of mental illness is 14, most individuals don't seek help until adulthood. Underlining the seriousness is the fact that 60 percent of high school students with mental illness don't graduate.
Living in an Indian society, mental health is something which is least talked about. Everyone has some risk of developing a mental health disorder, no matter their age, sex, income, or ethnicity. In the times where people make fun about mental health, it is difficult to even diagnose mental health issues. Due to the increase in competition and pressure put on the student by their teachers, classes, tuitions, parents and friends they get lost, confused and no one to reach out for, which can build up over the years resulting in forgetting who they really are and have no aim or dreams to look for in the near future.

Children’s minds are sensitive and delicate like flower, and when they are affected through the growing stages of life, due to lack of guidance they tend to do things which are wrong and hence mental health and education is important. The first and foremost reason for India to lose its mental health is the lack of awareness and sensitivity about the issue.

Hereby, we students of Wilson college request our Educational Ministry to consider our plead and focus on introducing Mental Health as a mandatory topic for every course. This will help to maintain a good environment for students regarding opening about their mental health issues. Also, it will guide young minds about the seriousness of the problem and help them support the survivor.
