World book day! An annual event which fills parents up and down the country with dread. A day started with the hope to reach children who for one reason or another do not have access to books or are not engaged by them. A wonderful idea in principle that’s completely lost it’s way. Books are wonderful all children should have access to as much inspiring and creative material as they can physically absorb my children have hundreds and read daily. What should be a day of creativity and fun designed to spark our children’s imaginations is actually a day where parents are put in the situation to present their loved ones at school in a costume relating to their favourite character in a book. Now yes I recognise that rather than buying a costume which has become the socially pressured norm I could make my own for my three larger than life boys. I would love to be the creative mum who has the time patience and skills to make something with my children to celebrate this day but the reality is I’m not. I do not have the time I work long late hours as well as running a house and raising my children. The supermarkets have grabbed this opportunity by both hands and a peer pressure situation has been created. Nobody wants there child to be the kid sent to school with an egg box and loo roll on his head so we bow to the pressure of buying one. Not only is this uninspiring it’s costly. Most families find money tight without having to scrape together extra penny’s for this event. The day is supposed to be inclusive for all! What I would like to see instead is schools having a creative day making things with our children be that hats, glove puppets etc sing, play music or games put on little shows for each other paint to their hearts content. Surely nurturing a child’s creativity in this way is much more achievable? Let’s join forces and help promote the actual purpose of world book day rather than conform to the anxiety ridden day it’s become
