INVESTIGATE DEATHS OF 26 NIGERIAN MIGRANTS

The deaths of 26 Nigerian women in a migrant boat is a wake up call for the protection of migrants globally. Hundreds of passengers in migrant boats suffer sexual harassment,  rape and other forms of violence. Migrants who seek greener pastures abroad, through illegal means are sexually harassed, abused and subjected to inhuman treatment. Many underage children are being sold into slavery, prostitution, child labor, and are kept under inhuman condition. Human traffickers  are guilty of violent conduct and rights violations.

Every year, thousands of Nigerians, mostly young girls are assaulted, killed, impregnated, enslaved and or sold into slavery by traffickers who take undue advantage of their circumstance by promising them better life and opportunity. In some cases, they are abandoned to die or imprisoned. Over ten thousand Nigerians die in the desert and Mediterranean sea every year seeking to cross to Europe via the Italian coast of Lampedusa.

Reports of the deaths of the 26 female Nigerian migrants appeared on several local and international newspapers. This Day online newspaper has reported that the Italian Police is already investigating the deaths, while the BBC expressed suspicions of sexual abuse and murder as the victims attempted to cross the Mediterranean. The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), International Migrant Organizations, Government of Nigeria and CSOs, should join voices and forces with ANEEJ and EWDI, to sign this petition calling for full investigation into the deaths of the 26 women and rights violation of other passengers in the migrant boat.
