The Alberta Government is “retooling” or in other words, cutting funding for Children’s Services.

Effective March 31st 2020, the children’s service ministry is cancelling about 450 grants and contracts with about 300 organizations. These organizations run parent link centers (Alberta Parenting for the Future), home visitations, family resource centers and prevention programs. These centers offer FREE parenting classes, developmental screening, early learning classes and a safe place for our children to play and interact with each other. Everything is FREE.

How does this affect your family? If you utilize any free classes or play places in your community that are run by Parent Life Centers, Alberta Parenting for the Future, etc, these will likely be closed down or funding significantly cut if they are one of the many organizations that have had their contracts cancelled.

For example, Spruce Grove, we have an amazing Parent Link Centre (Alberta Parenting for the Future), Beaverbrook that may be closed, which would be a huge loss for our community.
In Stony Plain, The Family Connection Centre is a pivotal force in the community. So many families rely on the services they offer, and there are so many. From what I understand, the centre has submitted their plea to keep their funding and are currently in a waiting period to see what will happen.
Some free classes we’ve taken through Alberta Parenting for the Future are classes such as: baby sign language, classes where toddlers learn different songs, tummy time classes, and there are so much more available. There was a class I learned about that includes lunch for moms of newborns and while they took care of their babies, their older kiddos would be looked after by some of the awesome staff. Tons of play time and an amazing place for moms to meet up and chat while their kiddos burn energy. Likely these classes will be paired down to a minimum amount.
It is important to note that their will be people losing their jobs through these cuts, potentially hundreds of families will be affected financially.
Funding is being cut from $77 million to $65 million, this $12 million “retooling” is what is causing us to lose some of these invaluable services, starting March 31st 2020.

So what can you do? Start by signing this petition, circulating it, getting Children’s Services Minister Rebecca Schulz’ attention, getting Jason Kenny’s attention, and hopefully someone can get it into the right hands to see a positive change to these budget cuts for these very important services. Free services that are vital to a working class family, just making ends meet.

Thank you for your support!
