Make Breaks Between Classes Longer/Bring Back Asynchronous Classes

Make Breaks Between Classes Longer/Bring Back Asynchronous Classes
Why this petition matters
During this pandemic, remote learning is one of the biggest things that has started. Students in Edison are to do school using video conference meetings such as Zoom and Google Meet. Students and teachers are always on the computer, which brings fatigue to the eyes. Previously around the start of the 20-21 school year, there had been a schedule that every two classes there would be a 15-minute break. This was an outstanding idea because it gave students and teachers to get off of the computer and do something else in the meantime. This refreshed students' minds and gave their eyes a break. For example, you could go and have a snack, read a book, or even socialize during these breaks. Remote learning has limited socialization by a lot and is crucial for student mind growth development. Research has shown that students are more focused and learn much more efficiently when their minds are refreshed.
If we are unable to take breaks longer, then please consider bringing back asynchronous classes.
On Wednesday, February 3rd, teachers received an email from the Board of Education around nighttime that asynchronous classes will not continue and the decision is effective immediately. Upon hearing the news in classes, many students are enraged by the decision. Many teachers are even enraged since asynchronous classes gave time for teachers to grade student’s assignments, tests, and/or quizzes. Asynchronous classes also helped students focus on their assignments more and even encourages responsibility within them. These classes also made students calmer and less stressed out since the students can work at their own pace to those who usually do not have enough time in class to finish their assignments. If assistance or any questions need to be asked, students can just simply message their teachers on Google Chat, and teachers will respond back. As a student in Edison schools, I was very resentful of this decision. As of 9:34 AM on Thursday, February 4th, I only have confirmation that middle school has removed asynchronous classes. This post will be updated regarding new information. Please join me in changing this decision and sign this petition to help the students and teachers. Bring back asynchronous classes or make breaks longer!
