This petition is to show solidarity for the Edinburgh Women’s Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (Registered Charity Ref. SC 006208) and to demonstrate that the capital needs and cares about this amazing place.  We would like to ask the Scottish Women's Convention to help increase awareness of the centre and its financial sitution to those in the Scottish Goverment.

The Centre offers free and confidential emotional and practical support, information and advocacy, to women, girls aged 12 and over and all members of the transgender community, who have experienced sexual violence from male or female abusers at any time in their lives. This includes rape, sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse and ritual abuse.

For the last 30 years they have provided support to thousands of survivors in South East Scotland. The centre is based in Edinburgh city centre but there is also a outreach service in East Lothian, East Lothian Sexual Abuse Service (ELSAS). They work to empower survivors: to support them to find and make their own choices. They also provide support for family, friends or partners who are in a supporting role, and workers in other agencies.

The Centre brings women together who are feeling isolated and is a safe haven for many.

Many people were unaware the Edinburgh Women’s Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre had faced a major funding crisis. It was previously been granted funding from a big funder of £500,000 over 5 years. This period was coming to an end and if continued funding was not found they would have to cut their service by 40%. They have submitted several funding applications to different funding sources but it was difficult to secure.  As you can imagine this was a massive threat to the running and continuation of the valued services that the Centre offers.  On the 19th April 2013 EWRASAC announced they managed to secure funding for the next year.  This is obviously amazing news.  However a specialised vital service such as EWRASAC should not have to face this dire threat again in a years time.

Update: The facts are that the need for rape crisis services is greater than ever- last year EWRASAC supported 416 service users, and currently has a 12 month waiting list for its long-term support and counselling services. However, funding remains a significant challenge for the service- 75% of EWRASAC’s frontline support and counselling service is currently at risk due to funding streams which end 31 May 2014.
