Joy Thurston started this petition to Edinburgh City Council and

Every year a sequence of festivals happens in Edinburgh's city centre that makes our home a distinctly less pleasant place to live.

There are issues wit over crowding, litter and opportunist airBNB landlords pushing up rent. Not to mention damage done to the city's parks and landmarks.

Although the influx of people for festival represents a large financial gain for the city and it's business owners, it has a demonstrable negative effect on our community and the city's wellbeing.

We would like to request that the city be managed with it's residents in mind, rather on a yearly cycle geared towards tourism and the big summer cash grab. A cash grab, that it would seem, often does not seem to be distributed evenly to the residents of this city.

As a means to begin this shift in mentality, we would like to request that every fifth year, beginning 2020, be taken as a fallow year from the summer festivals in order to give local residents and officials space during the summer months to focus on local projects and regeneration.

We also believe that this cycle may go some way to discouraging property monopoly from AirBNB magnates, who will stand to loose income every fifth year.
