I have been visiting Greece and learning Greek for 20 years. I have some family connections with Greece and spend about 3 months per year in Greece. Until 2013 I lived and worked within the EU (in Luxembourg), where multilingualism is encouraged, and where many thousands of Greek nationals and speakers work. It is shameful to try to ignore or ostracise this brave and deeply human country, and to lose access to formal qualifications in their language would show a pathetic attitude to both education and international communication.

I believe that the Greek language is of great global importance and should and needs to remain in the educational system. It gives the Greek diaspora and people who love this beautiful language the option to have a qualification and in effect continue their support for the survival and expansion of Greek as a second language.

Being first generation Australian, now living in the UK. I completed the equivalent in Australia. I valued my studies and appreciate the importance of learning an additional language, its cultural significance and history. I want the same for my children. As a teacher myself, I see how children in this day and age struggle with their own cultural identity. The wealth of knowledge gained by studying a language of their own cultural background give students a sense of belonging and appreciate others in such a diverse society.

Because I am originally from Cyprus. I want my daughter to do her GCSE and A Level in Modern Greek. I promised my Yaiya at her funeral that I would learn and so would my daughter!

"Our critical problems generate some agony and melancholy. This phenomenon is characteristic of our epoch. But, to my thesis, we have the dynamism to program therapeutic practices as a prophylaxis from chaos and catastrophe. Our gnomon has to be a metron between political, strategic and philanthropic scopes." Modified from: Logoi, X. Zolotas 1957-1959

I'm a British Cypriot living in the UK and I completed both the Greek GCSE and A-Level examinations. The exams needs to stay in tact for the future generations.
