Support single parents in poverty
49% of children living in lone-parent families are in poverty. This means children go hungry, miss out on education and bullied because of their predicament. Children are living in unsafe accommodation, with broken or no furniture, no beds, food or adequate clothing. Coming from a poor background should not be the reason to hold a child back. Better accommodation in safer areas are need so children are kept safe.
Living without the security of decent housing with constant pressure created by low paid work or unemployment has significant consequences for emotional and psychological well-being, family relationships and the lives of children.
Since the pandemic single parents are more likely to have lost hours and to have lost income in recent months. They are more likely both to have furloughed and to have lost their jobs. Hence, the single parent employment gap has widened as a result of the pandemic.
Single parents need high-quality flexible and part-time jobs.
Improved childcare support which is currently a key barrier- better help with the upfront cost of childcare.
Ensure our social security system provides sufficient and effective support both for single parents who are out of work and those in employment.
