In Massachusetts there are 962,297 students in grades K-12. For these 962,297 students there are 2,430 guidance counselors. That means that for every 396 students there are in are school, there’s just 1 guidance counselor for all of them. As a state we aren’t doing so bad with this current ratio of 396-1, but we could also be doing so much better.

With the American School Counselor Association recommending that each school have 1 guidance counselor for every 250 students, you can see that as a state Massachusetts far exceeds that advised number. We are currently 146 students above the recommended amount to have per each guidance counselor. As you can clearly tell, Massachusetts’s guidance counselors are spread rather thin.

In many schools across Massachusetts, like it is for others in the country, students are forced to live in challenging environments that aren’t doing much to help their mental health. In the media we see people getting killed because of the color of their skin. We see young people losing their lives because a person decided to open fire on unarmed students. We see our parents going through hardships and not knowing what to do to help them through it. All of this affects the way students interact with each other in school. It affects the way they’re able to communicate their troubles with others.

That’s why we need to give more funding to Massachusetts guidance counselors. The more funding they have, they more resources they have, and the better they can help out students across the state.
