Problem
Across America there have been many different cases of domestic violence involving guns. Domestic violence affects millions of women across the country and when guns get into the hands of someone who may have or does have a domestic past or is an abuser, they can turn abuse into murder. In an average month, 50 American women are shot to death by intimate partners, and many more are injured. Nearly one million women alive today have been shot, or shot at, by an intimate partner. There are twenty states that have already taken apart of this gun ban on domestic violent abusers including: Arizona, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia. The court must order the immediate suspension and surrender of any license to carry firearms and order the respondent to surrender all firearms and ammunition to the appropriate law enforcement immediately upon the service of the order.

Solution
We believe that Michigan should have stronger gun laws on domestic violence abusers. Michigan gun laws operate on a “Shall Issue” policy at the local level. To purchase handguns privately a purchase permit, background checks and firearm registration is required. Only residents are allowed to purchase handguns with non-residents being allowed to purchase long guns. Concealed carry permits require a firearms training course that has been state approved. There are exemptions for non-residents who are in the military, have a Michigan driver's license or are registered to vote in Michigan.” Between 2016 and 2017 the National Domestic Violence Hotline recorded a sharp increase in calls where firearms played a role in domestic abuse. Michigan has fallen short of solving this problem because people want it to decrease not increase. We hope that Michigan lawmakers will make this law stricter and in hopes that Domestic violent users will be lowered.

Personal story
I was a witness of a severe domestic violence case. I watch an issue escalate so much that people could of been severely harmed. In addition, I went into foster care and now live with that memory. I want to raise awareness on such an issue.
