They say a picture is worth a thousand words; a picture from the 1961 Freedom Riders is worth seeing in a magazine. Charles Person was an original Freedom Rider when the Greyhound bus was stopped and beaten in Birmingham, Alabama. Only one photo has ever been published. As part of our spring break trip, a group of UW-Stout students, from Menomonie, WI, got to meet and discuss the freedom rides with Charles Person. After meeting with Charles Person, he told us that Ebony Magazine has additional photos of the beating by Alabama Klansmen in the late 1960s. These photos, if published, would document the event and create a conversation about the riots. I don’t know why the photos aren’t published, my classmates don’t know and Charles Person does not know. Everyone is entitled to their history and Ebony Magazine should publish the photos so the full story can be told.
Charles Person was one of the Freedom Riders who was getting pummeled by rioters. Here is a video link about the Birmingham Bus and photos that have been taken.
