From apples to grunge music, Washington State is known to produce great things.
In the heart of our great state lies a vast swath of amazingly fertile land where a great majority of our crops, such as apples, are grown.
This area is home to Robert E. Elementary School. Yes! Washington State, a state that had nothing to do with the confederacy, has a school named after the leader of the Confederate Army.
Given recent events in our country, this "rotten apple" has come into the focus of many.
We encourage the Eastmont School District Board, East Wenatchee City Council, and Mayor Steven Lacy to remove this blemish from our beloved state.
We also offer a suggestion for a new name.
Tom Zbyszewski, a native of Carlton, WA and student at Whitman College in Walls Walla, lost his life, along with two others, while fighting the Okanogan Complex fire in August of 2015. He died a huge hero who protected small towns.
Tom was known by his family and friends as having a big heart and was well liked by all.
Students in Washington State deserve to look up to actual heroes - not those who fought to tear our country apart.
