Requesting Eastern Michigan University to waive online/hybrid fees for the Fall semester

After multiple failed attempts of expecting an answer from the Office of the President regarding the outrageous fee structure that they built, I have decided to make a public appeal because I am suffering. Please take a moment to read this through the end.

Eastern Michigan University has decided to reinstate the online/hybrid fees for classes ($80/credit for online and $60/credit for hybrid) for undergraduate students, and this is a very unexpected move. The University justifies this by saying that most of the classes that are being offered right now in-person are more compared to what they were last year, but students have been facing trouble to find options to study in-person in classes of their choices, especially Seniors studying at the university.

A $9060 bill for 15 credits is being charged without any scholarships or financial aid (and I am saying this because this was billed to my account), as a result of the reinstatement of online and hybrid fees. International students like me are do not even qualify for FAFSA which means we have to pay everything out of our pocket.

An attempt to already increase the fees was made by the university by introducing "block tuition", a move that would boost four-year graduations. The block tuition that has been implemented is for credits between 12-16 that are taken at a fixed price of $6975/semester (excluding any extra costs that will be added later to your bill). Life has become difficult during the pandemic, especially for students like me who are travelling all the way from a different country to the US to pursue our dreams. The reason I opted to study at Eastern Michigan University was that it was affordable and offered great educational opportunities.

How exactly is it the student's fault if the university cannot offer the same number of classes in-person as it did before the pandemic? I agree that the number of classes currently offered in-person has increased, but as an example, 2 out of the 4 classes that I am taking in the Fall semester do not even have an in-person section offered, and if I decide to not take those classes, I won't get ahead in my degree, and there are many students like me who have the same fate as I do.

My complaint with the university is not regarding the number of in-person classes offered, it is instead the reintroduction of the online and hybrid fees for the Fall 2021 semester. With the pandemic still around, the university must consider waiving the online and hybrid fee for all the students just for this upcoming Fall semester.

I request the university to consider my plea, along with the rest of the students studying at Eastern Michigan University towards making education easier and affordable for students by waiving the online and hybrid fees for the Fall 2021 semester, and prevent them from dropping out of their degrees, especially for students like me who already face enough hardship in achieving our degrees and dreams.

As once the great Eleanor Roosevelt said: "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams!"

Sincerely, on behalf of the EMU student community,

Faizan Akheel
