Hands Off Castledown! Keep Our Community School!

Castledown Primary School is one of the last community schools in Hastings and St Leonards. It prides itself on its inclusiveness, diversity, and equality for ALL children. It has a strong history of promoting creativity through the arts and sport. It is also proud of its Green Flag Eco school award. The planned transition for Castledown to become an Ark academy is completely at odds with the values we hold dear. Parents have had no say in this decision and we believe this to be wrong, the school needs to represent its community.
Ark is currently failing at least two of its four schools in Hastings and its excessive emphasis on Maths and English pushes creativity and sports to the background which prevents pupils from receiving a well-rounded education. Ark academies can and do employ unqualified teachers this is not what we want for the children of Hastings. Castledown School has a significant number of children requiring additional support; this is something that Ark academies do not supply readily or adequately.
We believe that parents wishes are valid and important, as are those of the people of Hastings and we should all have a say in the way Ark are monopolising education in our town. This proposed change to our school has been carried out in secret and presented to us as a done deal; it really isn’t, we oppose it and our voices need to be heard.
