It has come to light from a recent case that Williamwood High School’s sexual harassment procedure is not effective in creating a safe environment for it’s students.
A pupil accused of sexual assault has been allowed to continue to attend class, despite an ongoing court case and widespread discomfort amongst pupils.
The school's fifth year depute head was first notified of several cases of sexual harassment from the accused in 2016-17d. Little action was taken at the time, and given that this case was allowed to escalate to sexual violence gives us little faith in Williamwood’s sexual harassment procedures. If this case had been handled differently, this horrible crime may never have happened and the pupils of Williamwood would feel safer.
We, as pupils of Williamwood High School, want to see not only the accused suspended from school until at least a court verdict, at which point further action may be taken depending on the outcome, but a substantial change to the school’s sexual harassment procedure. We believe this will help to create a safer, friendlier environment for pupils. Schools are a place for education and safety, and the way in which this case has been handled gives us little faith in the system and is in stark contrast to the school’s visions and values
