Heather Penden started this petition to East Providence School District

We live in challenging times. Our society challenges us with high costs of living, longer working hours in a week, and unfortunately we tend to push this mentality onto younger school-aged children. We ready them for reading earlier than ever before, we measure cognitive growth and development nearly yearly and prepare them to do well on statewide TESTS so our public schools receive BUDGETS they desperately NEED. We find ways to supply kids with technology so once they can utilize it, it will “save time” in the long run.
We in East Providence entertain the idea that all this preparedness for the future can continue in buildings erected for populations past. The notion that we can expand minds without increasing space has prevailed. As our population numbers steadily rise, we still provide a quality core education, but if we don’t expand our primary schools, are we really planning on success?
Recently the dedicated Art and Music rooms within our building at Myron J Francis Elementary in Rumford were taken away to meet other needs within our school. At a time when children’s anxiety is at an all time-high, when marked numbers of sensory processing disorders are being documented, and when we must drill our young ones for traumatic scenarios to keep them safe, how could we limit access to a child’s space to create?

  • Art classes have a documented history of providing therapeutic benefits for all children- no matter their affliction nor demographic. Art instruction develops a child’s ability to make spatial relations and stimulates young minds to work with measurements and scale— a necessary base skill for many vocational/ mechanical careers.
  • Science has shown when children play music, their brains develop neurophysiological distinction aiding literacy and translating into improved academic results.

Our school district is proud and capable and hires the best, most qualified and kid-loving art and music teachers, but we make them serve up lessons from carts now.
EP is better than this.

Please reconsider the importance of returning the robust creative arts programs that require building space, East Providence School District. Our kids need these spaces in the present primary years so they can have opportunities in their future.
MAKE ROOM FOR ARTS for the sake of our kids.

Thank You.
