On 21st September 1745, Jacobite and Government forces clashed at Prestonpans in a battle to decide who should rule Scotland. The unexpected victory of Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) sent shockwaves through Europe, and although his cause was ultimately defeated at Culloden, the Battle of Prestonpans left a rich cultural and historical legacy which still continues to this day.

The battlefield is listed by the official Historic Environment Scotland Inventory of Historic Battlefields and is actively promoted and interpreted by the Battle of Prestonpans (1745) Heritage Trust and others in the community.

Despite this there are ongoing attempts to DESTROY this nationally significant battlefield and to turn key parts of it over to INDUSTRIAL USE. A local community councillor recently stated that there is "no interest" in this battlefield or its protection, which we strongly reject. We believe instead that our elected representatives have a responsibility to future generations to defend this important heritage asset from either wholesale or piecemeal destruction, and to actively support sensible initiatives to improve rather than weaken both its protection and its tourism potential.

We the undersigned therefore appeal to all those with the power to do so TO ENSURE THAT PRESTONPANS BATTLEFIELD IS PROTECTED FROM DAMAGING OR INSENSITIVE DEVELOPMENT, and is treated with the respect and sensitivity due to such a nationally significant heritage site.
