Lily Laban started this petition to East Devon District Council and

Sidmouth Primary School has been awarded 4.2 million pounds by the Department for Education to combine its existing two infant school sites (Vicarage Road and Manstone Avenue) into one building. This will be achieved by redeveloping the Manstone Avenue site so that it can accommodate all pre-school, reception, year 1 and year 2 pupils (age 2 - 7 years). Part of the plan for the redevelopment however, is to build an Astro turf all weather pitch over the existing green field area at the Manstone site. On the approved plans for the redevelopment, this is to be ‘1 mini tennis court and a reduced size netball court or full-size basketball court’. The all weather ‘MUGA’ pitch will cover all of the field and requires the existing trees and wooden play equipment  to be removed, as well as the pond to be partially filled-in. We believe 2 - 7 year olds do not need and will not use an Astro turfed basketball, tennis or netball court. The field and existing trees and climbing equipment should be retained as a fantastic resource and safe place for the children to run, play, climb, explore and learn. It could be further enhanced by including some areas of all weather surfacing and purpose-built play equipment that is much better suited to the needs, learning and play of infant school-aged children, but which does not have the same footprint as an all weather pitch and therefore would not need trees to be cut down and all of the existing green field and natural habitat to be lost.
