For too long, there has been a massive disconnect between state regulators and early childhood educators. This schism is perfectly exemplified by the recent job opening for 'Director of Licensing Program' with the Oregon Department of Education's Office of Child Care. Absent from the job requirements is any actual experience or education in the field. The apparent lack of knowledge and experience required for this position is a disservice not only to the families of Oregon and the early childhood educators supporting them, but the children most importantly. We deserve, expect, and demand more. As early childhood educators and Oregon families, we demand the person to fill this role has the direct field knowledge and experience that is required to be an effective leader, and in fulfilling the very important responsibility of safeguarding Oregon families and children. These qualifications must be represented in the job posting and reflected in the hiring process.
