Medical General Merit Private Seats (GMP) for Resident OCI Children

In Pravasi Divas 2017,  Mr.Narendra Modi said “Let us turn Brain Drain to Brain Gain”. The Govt of India welcomes NRIs/OCIs living abroad to come back home.

But unfortunately, in Karnataka, despite living and receiving their education in Karnataka for many years, the resident OCI children are denied the basic right to education.  They are not eligible for medical seats based on their merit.

Every other state in India treats resident OCI children and Indian citizens equally when allotting medical seats. However, the Karnataka Government is discriminating against OCI children regardless of their efforts and hard work towards achieving their dream of studying medicine in Karnataka.

Even if our children are denied Government Seats with subsidized fees of Rs.70,000 (seventy thousand) per year, our children should at least be granted General Merit Private (GMP) seats in private medical colleges, which have an average fee of Rs.7,00,000 (seven lakhs) per year. However, our children are not eligible for these seats as well. The only eligible seats are NRI category seats averaging two crores (40+ lakhs per year), which is not affordable for any set of working parents earning in India.

NRIs will not return to their homeland if their children are denied the basic right to education.  This will negatively impact global investment in Karnataka.

Please help us correct this injustice and help our deserving children realize their dreams.

Thanking you,

Parents of the Resident OCI children aspiring for medical seats in Karnataka.
