Lunar New Years is a huge holiday celebrated by thousands of students in the school district of Philadelphia. We speak proudly about Philly's diversity and now, we need to act proudly. Although students are allowed to receive an excused absence, most parents are hesitant to pull their kids out of school and miss a day of their education.

A day off for all students in the school district will not only honor this major holiday celebrated by thousands but also acknowledge Philadelphia's cultural diversity. Lunar New Years is a time many spend on friends and family, we should honor that and not have to choose between our culture and our education.

We recognize that that 2019-2020 academic calendar has already been made, and that is why we are asking and petitioning for Friday, February 12th, 2021, the Year of the Ox, to be a day off.

We are not doing this for personal gain--we are a group of Asian American students at GAMP who will be graduating this May 2019. This is not for our personal benefit, but for the future generations of not only Asian Americans but also future active citizens. As a student at our school who doesn't celebrate the holiday at home said: "I want and need space to celebrate and learn by association."

New York did it in 2016 and Philadelphia will do it in 2021.
