The DVSA requires learners to have their theory test complete before they partake in their driving test. Given the UK’s continual fluctuation between lockdown and tier systems, it is increasingly difficult to establish a routine in driving lessons and many driving tests have had to be rescheduled or cancelled.

The theory test has an expiration date of two years, this means by the DVSA’s standard, you have forgotten all of the rules of driving and the road within two years. In reality, as long as you are driving or a passenger, it is very difficult to forget the most important rules of the road.

The theory test costs £23 every time it is taken. I feel that this is unfair for people to pay this,  given that it is completely out of our control with COVID-19 and the DVSA centres being shut. I took my theory test nearly two years ago, and I have a driving test booked a few days before my theory test runs out. If it were not for COVID-19 I would have done my driving test earlier, but with breaks due to tiers and lockdowns I had to refresh my driving memory.  I should be allowed a free theory test or an extension, and so should everyone else in my situation or similar. It is unjust to force us to retest at a cost when it is completely out of our control.
