Heads Up started this petition to Durham University

The aim of this petition is to call for the University to increase funding for the counselling service and to increase communication in regards to mental health policies and provisions with the student body.

Heads Up is a student-run mental health organisation, working as a branch of the nationwide charity, Student Minds. Our main aims are: to educate Durham University students about mental health issues; to give advice on self-help techniques; and to equip students with the tools needed to both support their peers and maintain their own mental wellbeing.

We conducted a short online survey which was promoted via Facebook and shared with university colleges by several college welfare teams. Hard copies were also distributed in the Student Union café. The survey received 131 responses; 109 online and 22 hard copies.

In one question students were asked if they believed that the counselling service provides enough support to those struggling with mental health issues. The results were highly concerning, with only 6.4% of respondents answering ‘yes’; 44.8% feeling they ‘somewhat’ provide support; and an overwhelming 48.8% responding ‘no’.

The need for transparency was highlighted when 44.3% of respondents claimed they were ‘not very aware’ of the university’s mental health policies.

Through further comments many respondents stated that individual students should be entitled to more counselling sessions and that there should be more transparency about the way the service operates. We believe more information should be available on how the university intends to support the mental wellbeing of its students, and there should be further discussion as to the training and specialisation of counsellors to ensure student needs are met.

This petition, along with a letter stating the aims of this campaign, will be sent to representatives of the University for further discussion.
