Cancel 1st and 2nd-year exams and reteach content lost during strike action and Covid-19.
Dear Durham University,
There are various issues associated with online assessments that have been raised by students including cheating, inequalities in access to resources and internet, student mental health and many more.
All students have been affected by the coronavirus and the strikes. This is not a petition about debating the university's decision to take part in the strike action/move teaching online due to coronavirus.
Our education has been severely hindered by our lack of face to face teaching time due to circumstances out of our control. It seems unjustified that we should have to teach ourselves and understand difficult concepts by ourselves and then be assessed on them during this difficult time. This time is stressful and impacts mental health enough as it is. We should be building on our education in a stress-free and productive way.
Therefore, first-year exams and many second-year exams should be cancelled and the university should use the time from April to June to enrich our educations and reteach all the content lost from strike days and days missed due to coronavirus. We have missed 27 days worth of teaching due to these circumstances and this content should be retaught to students to ensure academic progress.
Thank you.
