N A started this petition to Durham Police
Barry Cairns is currently volunteering at Durham Police HQ, 53 year old has Down’s syndrome. A direct quote from the BBC states, “the force ensures Barry does work a paid employee would undertake”, the question I am left with is why is Barry not being paid? In a report by BBC North East and Cumbria, Barry says “I love my job and I want to stay with it, everyone likes me because I do a good job here”. Shredding is his favourite as he finds it therapeutic, showing a positive impact on his mental health, however from the report you can see the large list of jobs allocated to him. There does not seem to be a reason why he would not be paid as he is doing all the work to a high standard. Many comments on the twitter video were also questioning this, Barry feels “just like everyone else”, but he is not getting paid and it is not fair!

Durham Police need to come to an agreement with Barry on some form of payment for this work he is doing.

I started this petition because…
I feel strongly about mental health and disability as a topic and want to take a stand. I want to make a difference and a positive change to Barry’s life.
