Implement more gender-neutral bathrooms at Sinclair Secondary School
This petition had 16 supporters
According to the National Post, at least 1% of all Canadians identify as trans. As well, this number increases within youth populations. This means that there are approximately 20 trans students Sinclair, not including those who have yet to come out to themselves or their peers.
Unfortunately, Sinclair Secondary School has but only one, single stall, gender neutral bathroom. Whereas Donald A. Wilson, another whitby school currently has two on each floor, and half the student population. Peculiar, since there are at least 4 staff bathrooms on each floor at Sinclair and an approximate 1:20 teacher to student ratio.
As a school, Sinclair should be dedicated to student and faculty safety. Instead, our administration puts many trans students at risk everyday by forcing them to out themselves by using the wrong bathrooms or wait outside a bathroom for it to be unoccupied. Not only this, but many trans students at Sinclair have even reported getting chastised by teachers for taking too long to go to the bathroom because they had to make a trek to the other side of the school where our single gender-neutral bathroom resides and didn't feel comfortable coming out.
This petition asks that Sinclair implement more gender neutral bathrooms, at least one on each floor. If not for practicality, then for the safety of its students.
