We acknowledge the issues of traffic congestion on Seaton Lane and Stockton Road, and welcome any action that would relieve this traffic pressure.
However, the existing proposals to widen the road and add an extra lane does not take into account the safety of local residents and vulnerable road users, such as the children at New Seaham Academy, Byron Terrace.
We object to the current process in which plans are being imposed upon local residents without consultation or their views being taken into consideration.
We note the plans have been drafted in order to accommodate a new housing development at Cherry Knowles, South Sunderland, as the transport infrastructure for this development will only commence after the construction of the housing is complete.
Seaton Lane Highways Campaign believes essential infrastructure for housing should be complete prior to the construct of any residential properties. This would allow the Local Authority to assess the transport needs in relation to Seaton Lane.
However, the fundamental principle is that a decision affecting our local community should only be made with consent and considerations of local residents who will be directly affected by highway changes.
