Tell the Durham City Council: No to cronyism and insider politics! Appoint Pierce Freelon to Durham City Council!
Pierce Freelon's campaign for mayor of Durham inspired a new generation of young people, and particularly youth of color, to engage in local politics than any election in recent memory. Though Steve Schewel was the eventual winner of the race, Pierce finished strongly in third place with nearly 16% of the vote and over 4,000 ballots cast to make him Durham's next mayor.
He was born and raised in Durham, and he wants to preserve the spirit of what makes Durham a thriving, creative community while ensuring opportunity for all. He is the founder of Blackspace, a digital maker space in Durham where young people learn about music, film and coding, and he’s frontman of the local jazz hip-hop band The Beast. He also co-founded Beat Making Lab, an Emmy-Award winning PBS web-series and social entrepreneurship community program.
When mayor-elect Steve Schewel's city council seat is vacated after his swearing in on December 4, the Durham City Council will appoint a member of our community to replace him. The choice is clear: appoint Pierce Freelon to city council!
