Ashley Dale started this petition to Durham City Council and

Goodwin Road is a quiet, semi-suburban, semi-rural road in North East Durham, NC. Most lots are zoned as Rural Residential and have lot size requirements (2 dwelling units per acre). A developer, Eagle Land LLC from Raleigh, NC, wants to reduce the lot sizes of 75 wooded acres on Goodwin Road from .5 to .16. This change is not reflective of the current lots within a 10 mile radius, nor does the city/developer have plans to ease traffic with the addition of potentially 300 cars per day on adjacent roads.

The 75 acres in question was once owned by North Carolina's richest man in the late 1700's - Paul Carrington Cameron. Mr. Cameron owned two current historical sites - Stagville Plantation and Snow Hill Plantation. Hidden in the 75 acres is a log cabin, built by hand in the 1800's, called the Snow Hill Tenant's House, which was lived in by plantation overseers. The developer has no plans to save the structure, or preserve the artifacts that exist around the cabin. When an email was sent to the Durham County Planning Director regarding the house his response was "I checked with (name redacted), our historic preservation planner, this morning. The structure is on the inventory database, though there is no write-up on it, which is why it did not appear in the data sources I had available to me yesterday. The structure has no protection from the City, the County, or the State, meaning that the owner could demolish it today."

Please sign this petition and help my community preserve this cabin and stop the destruction of valuable open space in Durham, NC.
