Rebecca Giguere started this petition to Durham City Council

This year, COVID-19 has forced our city's seniors, as the virus's most vulnerable population, to self-isolate. Duke Forest is a critical space for seniors, families, and others to access widespread outdoor space for exercise while allowing them to socially distance. However, with the oncoming bowhunting season, Duke Forest will be closed on weekdays for several months. As we have seen in prior years, this causes the forest to become crowded on weekends, making it much riskier for seniors and other city residents to be able to access the forest and get the exercise they need to stay physically and mentally healthy. While in the spring we saw that people respectfully stepped off the trail to keep six feet of distance, rising crowds due to weekday closures will lead to increased barriers to hiking, forcing people to frequently stop to maintain distance or risk exposure to COVID-19, as the numbers are already starting to rise again in our state. We ask that the Durham City Council temporarily pause bowhunting season this season due to COVID-19 to allow the city's most vulnerable to access the park freely during the week at a time when outdoor space and exercise is at a premium, as indoor facilities and crowded areas pose higher risk for contagion.
