In June, President Trump announced that his administration will begin to detain immigrant children in the same prison-like facilities where their parents have been held.
We believe that immigrants fleeing violence in their home countries shouldn’t be held in prisons, and that our city shouldn’t be supporting their imprisonment. Sign our petition demanding that Durham divest from banks funding ICE detention centers.
CoreCivic and GEO Group are the two largest prison operators in the country, and they depend on the financing of big banks to operate. In fact, according to a report by In the Public Interest, in 2016 these companies had debts of $1.5 billion and $1.9 billion – that’s huge! There are six banks that have been floating these prison companies and letting them operate under such high debts: Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, BNP Paribas, U.S. Bancorp, Wells Fargo, and SunTrust.
The City of Durham has almost $400 million in assets distributed across more than a dozen banks, but our operating budget is held by SunTrust, one of the financiers of private prisons and detention corporations like the GEO Group.
Let's ask Durham City Council to pass a resolution to commit to invest only with ethical banks!
