Help Keep Our Children Safe: Place Barriers Around Santa Rita Park
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
At this time, there are no barriers between our children and Highway 550, the Animas River or the Santa Rita Parking Lot.
- Highway 550: The speed limit at the site of the park is 50 mph. It takes approximately 198 ft to come to a stop while driving at that speed. A vehicle could inadvertently crash through the entire playground area.
- The average 3 – 6 year old can WALK from the flower garden to Highway 550 in less than 9 seconds and from the designated playground area to Highway 550 in less than 25 seconds.
- Parking Lot: At least 50 children are backed over by vehicles EVERY WEEK. Children can WALK from the picnic tables into the parking lot in less than 5 seconds.
- Animas River: Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1 - 14 years. Children can WALK from the playground area to the river in less than 60 seconds.
Although we would all like to think that we can keep our children safe, especially at one of our favorite play areas, accidents can happen in a blink of an eye. Children love to play, are very curious and... very quick. It is difficult to watch your child at all times, especially should you be blessed with more than one child. Due to the numerous potential hazards around Santa Rita Park, it is imperative that both a barrier to prevent cars from inadvertently entering the play area be installed and a fence be built around the play area and surrounding grassy area as well as between the parking lot and Highway 550 in order to limit those hazards. It is a small price to pay to save the life of one of our children. Lets act BEFORE we have a reason to. Please help by signing this petition. It will be brought before the Durango City Council for review.
