Andrew Chen started this petition to Dunlap Community Unit School District 323 Administrators

Recently, Dunlap has decided to ban Google Hangouts for all of its students. However, we, the Dunlap High School students, have relied on the efficiency and accessibility offered by this tool, and are petitioning for the Dunlap administration to reconsider their choice.
Throughout the first semester, Google Hangouts has played a pivotal role in allowing teachers and students to conveniently communicate with one another. With so many students online, the functionalities of Google Hangouts allow them to ask questions that can be seen and answered for the entire class at any time by their teachers without overwhelming their inboxes with emails. As well, Google Hangouts creates an umbrella for all Dunlap CUSD students to be able to communicate, greatly helping to solve the issue of certain students having technology accessible in different or limited ways at home. Not to mention that remote learners are often juggling numerous classes at a time which causes them to sacrifice attending one teacher’s google meet over others and, in turn, makes Google Hangouts a vital platform for exchanging correct information within a class.
We acknowledge that Google Hangouts has been misused in the past; however, we believe this issue has a fitter solution that does not involve stunting the learning experience of all students. For example, students who fail to follow guidelines may be banned whereas those who do follow guidelines may be permitted to use the resource. If anything, bullying is easier to document and report when it can be easily proven through chat records than in person. Moreover, this is a community issue rather than a platform issue. Beyond Google Hangouts, bullying would remain prevalent with any means of communication. Therefore, removing Hangouts only worsens communication without solving the problem. Rather than solving the initial problem at hand, another would be created.
As students, it is our duty to speak up and advocate for our educational experience. By doing so, we can be acknowledged and improve our education as a community.
