The suicide rate is on a constant increase. With the bridge needing to be closed almost each day and often more than once. It’s fair to say this is a crisis. Since 2013, 36 people have taken their own life or attempted to on the TayRoad Bridge alone.  That number is stupidly high. Especially when you consider that in 2013 there was 1. In 2014 and 2015 there was zero!!  9 people in 2016 and in 2017 and 2018 there was 13 each year. 

TayRoad Bridge officials have said that they have considered all options. They can’t extend the footpath railings Incase of an emergency on that. EMS need to be able to access the path easily. They can’t extend the outer railings as it would impact the structural integrity. A net under the bridge to catch anyone that jumps over is just not practical at all. 

That seems to be all they have said. There are numerous more options. Such as intercom systems placed across the bridge so staff can immediately speak to anyone and assess them instantly. More motivational quotes and messages from survivors across the bridge.  A plastic roofing placed over the walkway. 

None of this would be overly overly expensive and it would save lives. Something has to be done about this crisis on the bridge and you can be that someone by singing the petition.
