Duke Student started this petition to Duke University and

Today, after several conflicting emails, Duke finally informed us that we would have no access to our rooms to obtain belongings left behind over spring break. Though we understand the severity of the coronavirus epidemic and the need for social distancing, several of us have essential and irreplaceable medications, passports, and other essentials in our rooms and no plan to access these items is both dangerous and ridiculous. Others simply want access to things Duke has not deemed essentials (clothing, toiletries, laptops, and valuables), but would make the next couple months of their lives unbearable without them.

We have been told that the risk of bringing several students from different locations back to Duke would be catastrophic, however there are much simpler and fairer approaches here such as staggering arrivals that would limit exposure. The administration inexplicably chose against this approach.

Additionally, though the coronavirus has been declared a pandemic, K-12 students still remain in public schools and countless Triangle employees still commute to mass corporate offices. Coronavirus will spread, and Duke need not take on heroic and unproven actions in a ruthless attempt to stop it.

Clearly this extreme and unprecedented decision by Duke will have only a minor impact on disease spread while at the same time posing a major crisis for all Duke students. Please join us in telling Duke that they must create a plan now that allows us to grab our things - a decision that would be in line with what Duke's peer institutions are choosing.
