Lara Schuhmann started this petition to Duke Energy and

Asplundh has been commissioned by Duke Energy to remove all of the trees near their poles on the southern end of River Rd in Wilmington, NC. Unfortunately not only does this look terrible, it will increase the runoff and flooding to our neighborhoods - Shipwatch and East Bank Landing - which is already a major issue. This tree removal will also increase road noise and will remove the safety buffer many families in the neighborhoods rely on to protect them if a car runs off the road (something that happens more than we’d like to think and at excessive speeds). Additionally this tree line filters pollution from the exhausts of cars and trucks. Lastly, this buffer brings value to the homes in our neighborhood. A higher tax value brings more tax dollars for our county. The economic value of this tree line could be more than what Duke Energy spends in trimming costs. The environmental impact is huge on many levels.

This tree line consists of many types of foliage - live oaks (which do not impact lines on these tall poles), shrubs, long leaf pines and many others. Asplundh/Duke Energy need to stop this removal of trees immediately so a proper assessment of the environmental impact and economic impact can be performed.
