Dugout Memories Inc. www.dugout-memories.com and the Gough family have been an online retailer of historically reproduced Cooperstown Collection baseball caps (which are licensed through other manufacturers) and one of the earliest pioneers of sports commerce on the Internet since 1995. Our first arrival was noted by the Atlanta Journal in 1997 via Jackie Robinson 50th anniversary celebration then with Newsweek in 2000 for Main Street's E-recovery for our 1st store in Columbia, La (pop. 385). We not only wanted to sell a product but wanted to promote an educational tool with descriptions of historical events attached to each item. To say the following E-mail by MLB was heartbreaking would be an understatement. With the help of our customers and supporters, we want to appeal their decision as we feel DMI offers a positive contribution to promote baseball history with our storefront website.
" We are writing to inform you that your application to become an MLB Approved Online Retailer has been denied. Thank you for your cooperation." (MLBAM) Major League Baseball Advanced Media
We respect their decision but contributing to the history of baseball through an online forum should be one of the 6 criteria items to meet as well. Our application to be a licensed retailer (online) came under review of information provided which included (annual retail sales figures- online sales vs. brick/mortar%), site technology, overall variety of merchandise, USA vs. overseas sales, private/ return policies and other criteria.
We have serviced many clientele over the past 20 years with these licensed products through MLB Properties. We take every complaint, compliment, suggestion or personal E-mail message/phone call seriously. My customers know who is on the other end of the request/questions and comments. We are a family business working independently of the corporate entity. Our goals are simple: Be self-supporting, ad-free, be personal with our 25,000 customers and to offer merchandise with a touch of history/nostalgia. As a small online business, one can still give back to the community. One of the most memorable moments to date was in 2010, when a customer asked us if we could help with the T.L Thompson Children's Cancer Center in Chattanooga, TN. As you know, chemotherapy treatments often involve the loss of hair, which is extremely traumatic for these children. The hospitals try to set up rewards for these brave kids, (including a program called "Beads of Courage" for girls. We accepted the challenge to offer "Caps for Courage" for the boys.. What a joy to see these kids with their caps. We could not say no. That is really what it is all about in business sometimes. Just giving back to others not so fortunate.
The 2000 Newsweek article linked for review above states this. "It's about time Main Street , U.S.A. caught a break. Turns out the rise of the Internet, thought to be the final straw for our beleaguered streets, has been just great for Mom and Pop. In a new 400- town survey by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, 84% of respondents say the Internet use has been a "key factor" in economic growth."
For the many customers- present, past and future, we hope that you will help support our petition to help change MLB's stance on Dugout Memories Inc. being denied a newly required online retail license to sell MLB merchandise through MLB licensed manufacturers. It is not all about dollars but what you promote. And that is history. The full text of the Policy is posted above for one to peruse the criteria/legalities outlined for your insight. We hope that you will take the time to view the hundreds of comments our supporters have contributed below.
