Why this petition matters
Transfer responsibility and funding for the canals in Dublin to Dublin City Council.
Throughout the last decade, we have seen many failings of Waterways Ireland as a state body.
The Canals of Dublin are strewn with litter. Many areas are poorly lit and in a derelict state
Anti-social behaviour is on the rise and Waterways Ireland has done very little to combat the problem. Many Dublin city councillors have expressed their disappointment with how Waterways Ireland engage with them.
In recent years barges on the canal - both businesses and people's homes - have been threatened with removal and eviction notices served despite anti-eviction legislation enacted during Covid. Many are still left without the situation resolved.
Waterways Ireland, assisted by the Gardai, recently forced the closure of restaurant boats for offering takeaway services despite Dublin City Council's waiving of the requirements for restaurants to apply for takeaway permission.
State assets are being stripped to pay for managerial roles in Waterways Ireland when time and time again we are seeing the persistent mismanagement of our precious canals.
Questions need to be answered!
Does Waterways Ireland do a good job?
Does Waterways Ireland adequately clean the canals?
Does Waterways Ireland properly repair Jettys , Locks and provide waste water pump out facilities?
Does Waterways Ireland invest & facilitate local communities?
Does Waterways Ireland work with local councillors in a satisfactory manner?
Does Waterways Ireland care for the banks, grass and environs properly?
Recently Waterways Ireland received
1.7 million for the Lockkeepers house at Percy Place.
1.6 million for the overhanging bridge in Grand Canal Dock
1.2 million for the google bridge in Grand canal
Waterways Ireland are attempting to sell OUR graving docks to the highest bidder which could be 20 million.
In 2009 Waterways Ireland spent 400 k on cleaning the grand canal and 17 million on their corporate HQ in Enniskillen.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
