I was 13 and terrified out of my wits. That day, I had had to take a bus home from school. It dropped me at a distance from my house and I had to walk home. A guy followed me for over a kilometer, in broad daylight, asking me about my name, where I was from etc etc. All I could do was try to ignore him and later try to glare at him.

Thankfully, I reached home safely. So many others haven’t been so lucky. We live in an increasingly unsafe world where both men and women are victims. We instinctively freeze in such situations. Our brain stops functioning and we just shut down. Very few of us have the presence of mind to even try to counter-attack.

This is where self-defence training comes in. A 3 hour workshop I attended on my college campus helped me get over these inhibitions and taught me basic manoeuvres to escape such situations. It gave me the confidence and the belief that I was at least partly equipped to handle such situations. And I want every person to have this.

Instances in the news lend further credence. We read about a  27 year old who used the skills that she had picked up in self-defence training in school 15 years ago, to fight off her Uber driver and a 16 year old who used her knowledge of martial arts to fight off two inebriated men.

We have Krav Maga workshops as part of the freshers’ curriculum at my college, IIT Madras. Mumbai University too has made self-defence camps for women mandatory in all its colleges. If they can do it, why can’t others? The University of Delhi (DU) is one of the most prestigious universities in the country and having self-defence sessions here will be setting an example for the rest of the country as well. Also, the seven lakh students at DU means impact at an unimaginable level.

I’m starting a petition to have self-defence sessions as part of the curriculum for freshers at DU. Each day that passes without these skills leaves us incredibly vulnerable. Unfortunately, we only hear of more and more such incidents each day.

My request is for this to be included in the curriculum at DU today. For this, I am petitioning the Vice Chancellor and the Dean of Students’ Welfare at DU. I look forward to the day when every student here feels has the skills required to defend herself/himself. Bit by bit, let’s make this world safer. Sign my petition to help me start right away.
