Support Gender-Neutral Pronouns in Academic Writing

Academia has maintained an antiquated form of writing that is not consistent with the University of Denver's stated goals pertaining to inclusive excellence. Academic writing does not universally accept "they" or "them" pronouns as legitimate singular options to refer to a transgender third party or to a third party with an unidentified gender. This forces academic writers to use gendered pronouns like "he" and "she" which further misconceptions about gender roles and perpetuate a gender binary that excludes people who do not fit into either category. We are calling for a campus-wide commitment from the University of Denver to allow and support the use of gender neutral pronouns as legitimate pieces of Academic writing. If DU wants to say they promote inclusive excellence, this would be a crucial step towards fulfilling that promise to all of its students.
