Since 1865, St. Michael's school has been central to the town of Kannur, educating distinguished alumni (including countless officers in India's armed forces) for over 160 years. For all these years, its iconic facade has been a part of beach road. The small ground in front of the gate, giving access to the school is owned by the Defense Security Corps, based in the nearby cantonment area. The jawans and officers at the DSC, the school, and locals of the area have co-existed peacefully for decades without infringing on each other's rights of movement.

But in July 2021, DSC decided to fence off this ground without much discussion with the locals involved. This move effectively cuts off the main access to the school, and parking area for parents and other visitors, inconveniencing its thousands of students, and has the potential to cause traffic chokepoints and noise pollution at the school.

Beyond the interests of the school, this land is the last remaining vestige of Kannur's celebrated sports tradition which has birthed many national level stars. After losing their beloved Kota Maidanam (fort maidan) to central authorities, sports in the city took a major hit, denying an entire generation of open spaces for practice and recreation. The plot in front of St Michael's school remains the last piece of open land, that Kannur residents can use as a public, recreational, and open space.

While appreciating the vital role that DSC plays in protecting our armed forces, we request them to reconsider their decision to fence off this area. A solution that addresses DSC's needs for space can be balanced with an entire town's essential need for public spaces, and a historic school's right of way.
