Install Crosswalk Lights at Captain Palliser Elementary School's Crosswalk

Traffic safety along the Northmount Drive NW crosswalk at 34th StreetNW has been an ongoing concern for parents and students at Captain John Palliser school (CJP). The Captain John Palliser School Council (SC) and Parents Association (PA) members would like to strongly advocate for immediate improvements to the above-mentioned crosswalk. Our concerns with pedestrian safety at the crosswalk are as follows:        poor sight lines of crosswalk both eastbound and westbound on Northmount Drive,      limited visibility of pedestrians waiting at crosswalk due to street parking and school buses parked to load and drop off students, the existing stop sign on 34th Street NW highlights the crosswalk to Sir Winston Churchill city pool and not CJP. There are several visually impaired students that attend CJP

Please reconsider the proposed bike lane changes as they will reduce pedestrian safety.

The SC and PA support Northmount Drive corridor safety improvements needed to make crossing safe for all pedestrians and we particularly want to ensure the safety of our visually impaired students when they cross this busy street. We believe increased signage at the crosswalk, with solar operated flashing lights are required at a minimum. The SC and PA would like to advocate for the following improvements: installation of flashing lights and pedestrian crosswalk signs at the above-mentioned crosswalk, installation of signs with highly reflective sleeves due to poor sight lines, repaint crosswalk on the street, remove dead space in front of CJP sidewalk to create a bus pull in lane to reduce blocked sight lines.
The Captain John Palliser School Council and Parents Association members would like to see action taken by the City of Calgary as soon as possible. We are looking forward to your response on this important safety matter.
