Save our Public links

Last year you announced plans to kill off Public folders and break links all over the internet. Since then, hundreds of users have voiced their disappointment in what I expect has become your most active community topic.
For years we've trusted you with content that's important to us.
This Slashdot article summarizes it well:
"There are countless users who have been using the public folder to post images and files in blogs and forums. These aren't just worthless jokes and memes that nobody will miss if you flip the switch and break all of them. These are often valuable resources that users have created and entrusted to you to retain and keep online." One user even created a comic strip for the occasion, with another concerned the URL he registered with the Coast Guard containing potentially lifesaving information will go dark.
We're frustrated because in many cases it's impossible or impractical for us to update our links. We recognize as you evolve the platform you'll be forced to deprecate features and make decisions from time to time which are unpopular.
All we're asking for is a way to migrate our Public folder items to Shared Links in a manner that maintains their original URL's and keeps our old content from breaking.
There may not be many of us, but we're some of your earliest and most passionate users and evangelists.
