Merrill Neiman started this petition to Drexel University and

On August 19th, 2020 John Fry, President of Drexel University, announced the continuation of remote classes for the Fall quarter of 2020. This plan shut down all campus facilities including the Daskalakis Athletic Center (DAC) where students and others on campus go to exercise in their free time.  Administrators involved in the decision assert they are working to open the gym as quickly and safely as possible; however, after seeking answers it appears little progress has been made. This petition seeks the opening the DAC for the Drexel community and students still on campus this Fall to aid in the maintenance of their physical and mental health.

Understandably, President Fry is frequently quoted saying “Our first priority is health, safety, and well-being of the communities we serve.”  If the Drexel community’s health and well-being are a priority, President Fry should seek the speedy reopening of the DAC. Staying active by exercising is the best way to address these concerns. Students on classes and co-op at Drexel University have gone through a lot of stress and hard times in the recent months, from losing jobs to missing abroad opportunities and much more. It is imperative for people who undergo stress to exercise to maintain a healthy body as well as a healthy mind. Now, with classes and many co-ops operating remotely, there is a lack of activity in many student’s days. Students have struggled financially during these economically troubling times.  Access to an affordable gym would be a welcome sense of normalcy for the students and the Drexel community. Jobs on campus that were lost due to remote classes can now be found here. The DAC should be considered an essential facility at Drexel University.

It should be a priority of Drexel’s to open the DAC this Fall to ensure students stay healthy.  Most Philadelphia gyms have been open and operating since mid-July under strict guidelines. There are many reasonable and appropriate safety protocols available including mandatory social distancing, masks, temperature readers, sanitizing stations, reserved time slots, etc.  Before the announcement for remote classes, all students returning to campus were to be tested for Covid-19.  Covid testing can be required for all who wish to use the DAC. Drexel should adopt reasonable safety precautions and standards for the use of the DAC and reopening the Daskalakis Athletic Center this Fall.

It is clear that opening the DAC this fall presents many benefits to the community as a whole not only health wise, but also financially. Drexel University affiliates: If you are concerned about the well-being of those who are still on campus, please take a moment to sign this petition and show the support we need to get the DAC operational this Fall.
