On May 25th, beloved Minnesotan resident George Floyd was gruesomely murdered at the hands of police officer Derek Chauvin and other officers of the Minneapolis Police Department. Police brutality, systemic racism, and the genocide of innocent black lives have rightfully sparked widespread protests across the nation. Many people have actively participated in different movements to ensure that justice is sought and prevent injustice and the murders of black lives. Many institutions have responded to this tragedy with their opinions and efforts to the greater movement, but approaching day 7 since the death of George Floyd and the beginning of these national protests, the Drew University community still has not received any response from Drew itself. The lack of response is troublesome, especially considering how we are a small-knit community that cares about one another. Drew consistently prides itself on being a diversified, small institution that fosters community discussion, action, and change, but what discussion, action, or change has been done (in regards to this past week) to ensure that the black community and minorities at Drew feel safe and heard?

Your students have been hurt both physically and emotionally this past week at protests and other spaces, all in regards to the death of George Floyd and the larger discussion of racism. The nation is hurting. Your students are hurting. This is not an attack on the university, but a call to action. We as students want to see the university take strides to be more proactive and understanding. Nothing will change if people remain silent and compliant, it takes action and it starts with every one of us. This petition is to encourage Drew University to utilize its resources to benefit communities that are most devastated at this time. Below are a few different ideas on how this can be accomplished.

- Donations to: Minnesota Freedom Fund, Black Visions Collective, Reclaim the Block, Twin Cities Coalition, Brooklyn Community Bail Fund, and other bail funds, ACLU, Black Lives Matter, National Police Accountability Project, sharing the petition by Color of Change, and countless others.

- Check-ins with you’re the community and students

- Enhancing student-run groups that work with black minorities and other minority groups

Thank you for listening.
