As a result of campaigning by community groups Swindon council agreed to buy the shops and the floor of Cavendish Square and negotiated a price with the private owners. It was planned that once back in public ownership, money left over from the regeneration would be used by the council to resolve the decade long outstanding problems – flooding resulting from the absence of drainage, poor lighting, a collapsed fence, an unsafe floor. However, it has just been announced that the purchase has been suspended; the reason given being the fall in retail values owing to Covid. Yet this provides an opportunity for the council to try to negotiate a lower price, rather than suspend the purchase.

Responsibility for the sorry state of the Square ultimately lies with the council. They allowed the original developer to leave without installing drainage even though they did not build the roof that was promised. Buying it is not just a commercial investment. We believe the council has a moral duty to carry out its commitment to a community which has been badly let down by a failed regeneration. The remaining monies should be spent on installing drainage and dealing with the other issues after the council takes it back into ownership.

We call on Swindon Council to honour its commitment to buy the land and shops.
