Dredging Tweed River MUST be considered to reduce Flooding Impacts on the Community
Why this petition matters
- Tweed Valley has just experienced its second major flood in just five years
- Hundreds of homes were inundated and damaged
- Thousands of residents were affected by the devastation
- Local businesses suffered an estimated $57 million in damages and lost trade
- Public infrastructure will take years to fully repair
Tweed River and its tributaries have been silting up for years. This makes the river shallower and less capable of draining floodwater from the land. Sand spits in the river get bigger with each flood and divert floodwater toward the banks instead of carrying it straight downstream.
Blockages in the river are no different to blocked gutters on a home; the water cannot drain and is diverted around the blockage.
Dredging Tweed River would substantially increase its capacity to drain floodwaters off the land, protecting our community.
A new flood study needs to be undertaken to specifically examine the effect on floodwater of dredging the shallow parts of Tweed River between Bray Park and the river mouth.
THIS PETITION IS TO STUDY THE COSTS AND BENEFITS OF DREDGING THE TWEED RIVER.
Sign this petition if you agree that Tweed Shire Council must undertake a flood study that properly examines dredging as an option to reduce the impact of flooding on our community!
